It’s obvious that things in the town of Graystone are not ‘normal’. Lester, in a cryptic way, prepares the audience for the coming events in As The Story Goes. We are then introduced to Shotgun Sam, our protagonist and town oddball. Lester convinces a reluctant Sam to become a reporter for the Grapevine with the promise “You Could Be a Superstar”. Our attention is then turned to Tall Jerry, and the tensions between himself and Sheriff Brownie. But when Jerry sees Suzanne, his girlfriend, all his cares fade away. Suzanne, however, has problems of her own: namely, the Evil Lunch Ladies with whom she works at the local high school. Scene 2: The audience is invited into Lester’s Strange and Twisted World, where we meet more townspeople and hear their stories (Tipsy the Gypsie [Part 1 Part 2], 150 Years, So Beautiful). Finally, in Lester’s Soliloquy, he reveals that the Grapevine is a tool with which he can control town events; when he invents a story for the newspaper, it comes to pass by the time the papers hit the news stands. Scene 3: Sam goes Undercover in search of a good story for the Grapevine. In the process, he discovers that The King is being held captive in the high school cafeteria, and that the Evil Lunch Ladies plan on cooking and serving him to the students (Shoobie Doobie Doo). In Sam’s Confrontation with Lester, he finds that Lester not only knows about The King’s circumstances, but has orchestrated them for his own amusement. Sam decides that he must help The King, and Lester fires him. Act 2Scene 1: The students at the high school sing the Lunchroom Blues, because of the questionable origins of their food. A group of bullies start mocking Billy, Billy, Doggy Boy (who is, of course, half dog, half boy). When he’s finally left alone, Billy expresses his deepest desire in I Wish I Could Be a Hero. He then overhears The Song of the Evil Lunch Ladies, in which they describe their plans for The King, and also emotionally abuse Suzanne. Scene 2: Jerry tries to make Suzanne feel better after her bad day at the cafeteria in You Can See Right Through Me. Sam barges in on them, frantic for assistance in his attempt to help The King. Billy also enters with the same desire and the three start Getting Together. Each expresses their personal reasons for wanting to Rescue The King. Sam, to atone for his mistake of working for Lester. Jerry, to expose the Evil Lunch Ladies and get them out of Suzanne’s way. And Billy, to prove himself as a worthy person. Scene 3: While Mrs. Pindershoop distracts Sheriff Brownie by singing about Graystone, Sam, Jerry, and Billy sneak into the high school. They then perform a Jailbreak for The King. In The Aftermath, Sam, Jerry, and Billy explain to Sheriff Brownie what the Evil Lunch Ladies were about to do, and he promptly arrests the Evil Lunch Ladies and promotes Suzanne. He then admits that Sam is really not bad, and the entire town comes together in the end (Shotgun Sam {Reprise}, As The Story Goes {Reprise}).
