Pone Chicken Internet AwardsExit Mundi
Exit Mundi is a website that houses a collection of end of the world scenarios. The site describes in horrific detail all of the various things that could destroy the planet earth, or kill off the human species. Hooray. The menu is organized into several different categories, based on the origin of the cataclysm. The 'Space' category contains the most obvious ones, such as comet impacts and the sun blowing up, but the further you get into the site, the more outrageous the scenarios become (such as Borg invasion, or Cats killing everything and taking over). Of course, every single article on the site is presented as pure science. They really believe this quackery, and they expect you to as well. The cumulative effect of all this is one incredibly depressing website. You know the whole thing is a crock. You mock and laugh and move on, but deep down, it gets to you. The worst part is, most of these nightmares couldn't be stopped by human effort, even if we wanted to. There's nothing we can do about a black hole that's about to suck the earth into oblivion. The whole site is a wonderful reminder of how we're all going to die, and there's nothing we can do about it. I'd have to say that my favorite article is 'XY Conflicts'. It says that the X (female) chromosome is in the process of killing off the Y (male) chromosome, even as we speak. In the next 100 years, men will be largely extinct, and the few remaining men will be held captive on sperm farms, perpetually attached to some milking-machine apparatus. What a wonderful way to spend the golden years. All in all, this site gave me incredibly mixed feelings. I simultaneously wanted to laugh hysterically at this madness, and go jump off a bridge before the apocalypse arrives. For this insanity, Exit Mundi receives the first Pone Chicken Internet Award. Congratulations. |
